What is Bowenwork?

Bowenwork is a gentle manual therapy that uses subtle moves over muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves.  These moves alert the autonomic nervous system to shift from "fight or flight" mode to "rest, relax and repair" mode, letting the body know 'the emergency is over'.

At times our innate healing mechanism stalls or plateaus due to various stressors.  Bowen Therapy reactivates this mechanism so the body can then continue to heal itself.

The body may continue to integrate the changes     5 to 10 days after a session.  During this time other forms of manipulative therapy are discouraged so as not to dilute or interfere with the efficacy of the work.

Who can benefit from Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Technique is appropriate for anyone from infants to the elderly or athletes to the infirm.

For many conditions, people see improvement in   3-5 sessions one week apart and for those with more chronic issues, additional sessions may be necessary.

What can I expect?

  • After a thorough health intake and assessment, you will lie down in a quiet area on a comfortable treatment table (or sit in a chair if unable to lie down).
  • It is best to wear light-weight, stretchy clothing.  If you prefer to undress, you will be under a sheet for modesty and comfort.
  • A series of gentle rolling moves over specific soft tissues will be done, the practitioner will then leave the area for a minimum of 2 minutes to allow your body to begin its work.  After the body has had time to process the information the next set of moves will be done.  This will continue until the session ends.
  • A session lasts from 20-60 minutes.  [Please allow 90 minutes for the first visit]
  • When the session is over, the practitioner will go over some considerations for the week following your session and may assign simple exercises that will help the body to respond better to the Bowenwork.
